It’s almost time for Christmas and if you have children, they’re probably bouncing off the walls! It’s that time of the year when the countdown is on but it seems like those final few days are just dragging by. How in the world do you speed up the process or keep the kids entertained until Christmas finally arrives?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone in the feeling that the walls may come crashing down on your house. While it’s fun to think about Christmas through the eyes of a kid, it’s also an important time to find that balance and make certain that they’re staying entertained and active up until Christmas Day.
This year, why not try some new fun ways to keep the kids happy, excited, and maybe even a little bit calmer? Here are some great tips on keeping the children entertained until Christmas Day finally arrives.
How to keep kids entertained during the final countdown to Christmas
These ideas just might work to help those hours and days before Christmas arrives pass quickly!
Volunteer together as a family
The more that you can get out and about in the community together and volunteer, the better! This means that you and your children can create baked goods to drop off at shelters, hold a clothing drive to collect coats and other clothing items that there might be a shortage of, or even head down to the local Food Bank and put in some hours there. It’s also a great way to teach them about the true meaning of Christmas as well.
Have them all choose a new hobby
If your children are looking for things to keep them busy, why not let them try out some new hobbies that they’ve been wanting to do. Take them to the local dollar store or craft store and have them look around. You never know what they’ll be inspired by and want to create.
They’ll be able to choose from needlepoint, crocheting, painting, drawing, modelling clay, building puzzles…you name it. Plus, they’ll be using their minds and creativity at the same time!
Get them excited about counting down to Christmas
Head to the store (or shop online) and get each of the children their very own chocolate advent calendar. What this does is that it gives them something to look forward to every single day during the Christmas season. Once they receive it, it’s a pretty good guess that this is how they’re going to want to spend their mornings every single day…by running to their chocolate advent calendar, opening up the little door, and eating out their very own special piece of chocolate for that day.
There’s something truly special about having something of their own to enjoy every day until Christmas arrives!
Read as many Christmas stories as possible
As Christmas is nearing, it’s time to really amp up that excitement and read all the Christmas books that you have. Let the kids gather around and take turns reading all the wonderful books. You can even up the excitement level by heating up some hot chocolate or cocoa too and sipping away. Being able to sit together as a family and snuggle is one of the best ways to enjoy the final countdown to Christmas.
No matter how you decide to enjoy the Christmas holiday and counting down to it, these simple tips and ideas might help you get there quicker and maybe even a bit calmer. Having a plan is always a good idea to combat a bit of that constant excitement during the holiday season. Encourage your children’s excitement by pairing it up with some of these great ideas! They’re all family-friendly and so much fun!
These are all lovely ideas. Christmas doesn’t need to be expensive and things like reading nice books, doing christmas crafts can all be inexpensive. I also really like the idea of encouraging kids to help others at Christmas and donating to a local charity for those less fortunate.
My children always donate to the Giving Tree at Christmas, they choose the children and their gifts themselves.
Great ideas, I have family visiting so I’m h
Looking for thing to do with the kids. Christmas can be so expensive so this will help.
It can get hectic (and expensive) with additional family members. Hopefully, this will help a little.
We go away! Every year. We leave the evening they break up from school and return home on Christmas Eve. Then it’s time for a bath, hot choc and Christmas movie … and then it’s Christmas
Oh how lovely, I bet it makes it all feel extra special. Hope you have a lovely time x
Love the idea of volunteering together. We have been talking about going to visit the Old Folks in the local nursing homes this year in the run up to Christmas.
We loved doing that last year when my father-in-law was in a home, unfortunately we lost him this Summer so it’s a little too raw to go back at the moment. Maybe next year x
I’m planning on reading Christmas stories with them. I want to make it as fun a time as possible as there is a limited amount of time that they will still believe in the magic of the season.
I have done book advents in the past and wrapped 24 books under the Xmas tree so we could open a different one each night. The children loved it 🙂
We always have a home made Advent calendar with little parcels every day (a mix of sweet treats and little gifts). And we also celebrate the Advent Sundays together. lighting another candle each week until Christmas Eve.
I love that idea 🙂
We don’t bark up from school until really late this year so I feel like Christmas is going to be a bit of a rush
Oh, that’s a shame, I like a lazy lead up to Christmas.
Some great suggestions. We do lots of crafts and Christmas baking as well as watching christmas movies, reading books and Christmas shopping. All part of the lead up to Christmas for us x
I think the lead up to Christmas is the best part x
