I was always told when my children were small that Olive oil on a babies scalp was brilliant for removing the dry bits on skin from the scalp called Cradle cap. It worked on my two 🙂
Always make sure you dry baby properly and let their skin get plenty of fresh air.
i’ll second that previous comment – olive oil is great. And dr bronners soap – it contains no sodium laryl sulphate which many baby soaps do – you can use it on yourself too and for cleaning stuff.
Ooh never heard of Dr Bronners soap, will look into that one thanks 🙂
My two suffered from baby eczema, I’d recommend non-bio and cotton clothes. Also don’t bath them too often as it can dry out their delicate skin.
My eldest has bad eczema on her arms and wrists the best thing we have found is aveeno cream or bodyshop hemp body butter. Best thing we foudn for cradle cap was Breast Milk.
Right, you asked for it!!!!! I’m climbing on my soap box now.
Like many children, Big Sis suffers from terrible eczema. It took us months of doctors’ visits, prescription creams, and trial and error to realise it was the Sodium Laureth Sulfates that were aggravating her skin.
This harsh ingredient, added to make your product all nice and foamy, actually strips the moisture from your skin, causing irritation and even skin conditions.
Shockingly, if you look on the back of many top name specialist baby products, you’ll find SLS listed as a main ingredient.
As soon as we stopped using products containing SLS (and there were A LOT – including the toothpaste Big Sis was using) her skin immediately showed an improvement. Now, if we accidentally use SLS (one time her Nanny forgot and used a generic shampoo) her eczema flares up literally overnight.
So my tip is to steer well clear of anything that contains SLS and look for products that state they are Sulfate and Paraben free.
Incidentally, Persil non-bio is the ONLY washing powder that doesn’t set off her eczema.
The End.
THANK YOU for getting on your soapbox, I think that information could help a lot of worried mothers. I am going to check my children’s products now because their skin flares up from time to time and I wonder if it is when we use certain products! xx
Always use a nice soft ,clean towel
Aveeno cream is great for dry skin and if your baby had a sore bottom I swear by Metanium – it’s the only one that really clears it up quickly.
For breastfeeding mums, invest in Lansinoh nipple cream! It really helps sore nipples especially in the early days!
i’m with Jax2000 on the not using anything with SLS in it, earth friendly baby do some lovely bath products. x
The best skincare tip for mums is drink, drink, drink water Im not a fan of plain water but I make myself have 6 glasses a day and I can see the benefit
