We get that it can be difficult to feed your cat, especially if this is your first time owning a cat. That is why we help you by giving you a few tips and things to look out for when feeding your cat.
A Cat’s Diet
The first thing that you need to know when it comes to feeding your cat. Is that they are known as ‘obligate carnivores’, meaning that they are strictly meat-eaters. Their bodies need a certain amount of nutrients which can only be found in animal meat. As Taurine and Arginine, These are essential in your cat’s health and development. Without them, your cat can very easily become ill.
The easiest way to ensure your cat is getting all the nutrients they need is to feed them good, high-quality, complete cat food.
How Often Should I Feed my Cat
Many cats prefer to ‘graze’ throughout the day instead of being restricted to mealtimes, eating between 8 and 16 times a day if given a chance! If you let your cat graze feed, then it’s best to leave dry food out for them, as there’s a chance wet food will go off or be eaten by another cat.
It’s a good idea to weigh your cat’s food at the start of the day; by doing this, you won’t be tempted to overfeed your cat. Most cats are very good at knowing how much they need to eat, but some like their food and will keep asking for more. If your cat eats all of its daily allowances in one go and begs for more, it may be better to feed them two meals a day, splitting their daily allowance in half.
Change Cat Diet
Cats, like people, tend to be particular when it comes to food transition. So it will require patience from you if you are planning on changing your cat’s diet.
For example, if you want to change your cat food diet to a raw food one.
The first thing you would want to do is make sure to keep everything simple. To do this, make sure that you feed your cat the last meal of their old food diet the night before, leave it for about 12 hours before you switch to the raw food diet the following morning. Try using a flat board to serve the food rather than a bowl; this mimics natural feeding.
When switching your cat to its new food diet, make sure that you take your cat’s existing old food and mix in a small percentage of the new cat food. Ideally, you would want to start with 10%. Slowly increase this over 2 weeks until you have made a full transition.
These are some of the things that you will need to look out for when you are feeding your cat, and hopefully, you have found these tips useful and helpful in making sure that your cat has a perfectly healthy and balanced food diet.
