Why Our Family Can’t Wait for the Cambridge Festival 2025

If there’s one event that always gets us excited as a family, it’s the Cambridge Festival. Cambridge holds a special place in our hearts—it’s somewhere we love to visit regularly, whether for a day out exploring the city’s history, enjoying the stunning green spaces, or diving into the world of science and discovery. So, when we heard that the Cambridge Festival 2025 is bringing an action-packed 17-day programme of hands-on activities, workshops, and performances from March 19 to April 4, we immediately marked our calendars!

The festival is all about making learning fun, with almost all events being completely free. Across two dedicated family weekends, kids (and parents!) can explore everything from mind-blowing science experiments to immersive art experiences. If you have curious little ones who love asking “why?” or teens who thrive on hands-on learning, this is the place to be.

One of the highlights we’re especially looking forward to is Michael Rosen’s live performance on March 29. As the author of beloved children’s books like We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Chocolate Cake, his storytelling is sure to be a magical experience for families of all ages. We can’t wait to hear his poems, stories, and reflections—it’s a rare chance to see a literary legend in action.

If your kids love things that fizz, pop, and explode (in a safe way, of course!), then Dr Peter Wothers’ Free Range Chemistry: No Added Chemicals (March 22) is a must-see. His electrifying demonstrations will showcase the magic of chemistry using elements found in nature. Expect plenty of bangs, flashes, and jaw-dropping moments!

Another hands-on science favourite is Crash, Bang, Squelch! (also on March 22), hosted by CHaOS (Cambridge Hands-On Science). This interactive event allows children to take part in 50+ thrilling experiments, from creating chemical reactions to building robots—perfect for young scientists eager to get stuck in.

The festival also features cutting-edge research with Antimatter Matters (March 26), which delves into the mysterious world of antimatter through hands-on demonstrations, making high-level physics accessible to all ages.

Beyond science, the Magma Rising: A Journey to the Centre of Icelandic Volcanoes exhibition (Feb 26 – April 22) promises a captivating experience. Inspired by Journey to the Centre of the Earth, this exhibition brings the world of volcanoes to life in an artistic and scientific blend that will leave visitors in awe.

For little explorers, Floodfighters is a fascinating event where kids can design their own flood defenses using origami and engineering tricks. Meanwhile, Atomic Arcade turns nuclear science into an engaging, game-like experience that will have kids learning without even realising it!

History lovers will also enjoy Medieval Medicine: Myths & Miracles (March 27), where visitors can step into the shoes of medieval physicians and discover how ailments were treated centuries ago—perfect for those who enjoy a bit of historical intrigue!

From pirate treasure hunts to escape rooms, DNA workshops, and even an exploration of how animals use their jaws, there’s no shortage of ways for kids to learn through play. One event that’s caught our attention is Alice in Psychland: Eat Me! Drink Me! (March 29), which delves into the world of synaesthesia—a fascinating condition where senses mix, allowing people to “hear” colours or “taste” shapes. It sounds absolutely mind-blowing!

For those fascinated by the wonders of the world, Antarctic Adventure: Explore the Frozen Frontier (March 29) will be a deep dive into one of the planet’s most extreme environments, led by real-life polar scientists. And if your child dreams of working with robots, Navigating the Physical World: The Essential Role of Robots (March 29) will let them get hands-on with bio-inspired robotics.

The Cambridge Festival isn’t just an event—it’s an experience that brings families together to discover, explore, and learn in the most exciting ways. It’s a place where kids can see science come to life, immerse themselves in history and creativity, and even meet the minds behind some of today’s most fascinating research.

With so much on offer, we’ll definitely be making the most of our visits—and we encourage other families to do the same. Whether you’re local to Cambridge or fancy a day trip, this festival is an incredible way to ignite curiosity in children while enjoying quality family time.
