Kids love to explore and play in the garden. But parents know that, while fun, the garden can also be a dangerous place for children. Poisonous plants, sharp tools, and rough terrain are just some of the hazards that await small, curious hands and feet. To keep your kids safe while they play in the garden, here are some rules for them to follow.
Ask for Permission
“Hey, Mum/Dad, can I go play in the garden?” This is a question that your child should always ask before heading out to the backyard. This is so you, as a parent, will know where your child is and what they’re doing at all times. It’s a valuable habit to cultivate!
Dress Appropriately
Playing in the garden can get messy, so kids should wear old clothes that they (and you) don’t mind getting dirty or stained. Closed-toe shoes are also a must to protect feet from sharp objects or potential insect bites. You should also have your child wear sunscreen and a hat if playing outside on sunny days.
Follow Wintertime Rules
Your child may want to play in the garden all year round, but it’s important to set limits, especially during colder months. Make sure they understand the rules for going outside in the cold…and the first rule is to wear the proper gear! The work doesn’t end when it gets cold outside; there’s plenty to do around the garden come winter. But make sure your child bundles up properly (hat, mittens, waterproof boots, warm coat) before allowing them to play outside in the cold.
Be Gentle With Plants
Teach your children about respecting living things by reminding them to be gentle with plants. They should never pick flowers or leaves without asking, and they should avoid stepping on or pulling out plants.
Stay Away From Sharp Tools
Gardening tools such as shovels, rakes, and pruners can be dangerous in the hands of a child. Make sure your kids know that they should never touch these tools without adult supervision.
If, however, you want your child to join in on the gardening fun, you should look for a kid-friendly gardening set that includes essential tools such as a small shovel, trowel, and watering can. These tools feature soft, rounded edges so kids can handle them without an adult needing to be right by their side.
Ask Before Eating
As tempting as it may be, remind your kids that they should never eat anything from the garden without first asking an adult. Some plants may look harmless but could actually be poisonous if consumed.
Clean Up After Yourself
Just like inside the house, kids should clean up after themselves in the garden, too. Teach them to pick up any tools or toys they’ve used and put them away in a designated spot.
Stay on Established Paths
Rough terrain can easily lead to falls and injuries, so make sure your children know to stay on established paths while exploring the garden. If there are no paths, create them by marking out safe areas for kids to play and explore. The garden, for kids, is a magical place where they can learn, explore, and have fun. But it’s also a place where they need to be careful and follow certain rules to stay safe. By teaching your kids these rules and supervising their playtime, you can keep them safe while still allowing them to enjoy the wonders of nature.
