When the Mummy Matters family went to Lollibop a few weeks ago we were lucky enough to gain access to the Press Area where there were a few little treats available and a preview of the new game Skylanders which is due for release in the autumn this year. Had Curly been with us for the day then I’m sure we would never have left the tent, as it was, Little Bean took some coaxing away from it and she’s only 3!
From the Academy Award-nominated Toy Story film writers Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow come Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, a new breed of computer game where the child becomes the Portal Master. The Skylanders have used their magical powers and weapons to protect Skylands for generations, but an evil tyrant has frozen and banished them to Earth. On ‘earth’, children can collect over 30 figures, including the old favourite, Spyro, which, when placed on the ‘Portal of Power, magically comes to life before your very eyes in the computer game. Each character has different strengths and weaknesses, which can be brought into play strategically to face the different challenges of the game and their own heroic challenge, which is unlocked as more characters are collected.
As the story unfolds gameplay travels through different environments with their own look and feel, and each with their own new set of challenges, puzzles, secret areas, rewards and mini-games.
The figures have an integrated memory that saves the character’s progress in the game, including stats, ability, attack upgrades, and gold collected. They can be teleported through a friend’s Portal of Power to continue to play alone, as a team or in battle mode against each other. It doesn’t even matter if you play on a Wii at home and a Playstation at your friend’s house because your characters aren’t choosy about which platform they play on. Skylanders can be played on Wii™, Xbox360®, PS®3, PC, 3DS™, and mobile devices all using the same Portal of Power and figures.

Changing the look of spyro was really a bad move. I like the original. Shame, they’re just milking the franchise.
I like the original too but I guess they are just trying to move forward?
