Refreshing the lounge with Valspar paint

Valspar 1

We have been in our house for over 5 years now and the lounge hasn’t been redecorated since the first week we moved in. Yes we have changed the curtains, rug and cushions to give it a facelift but not a full-on redecoration. That all changed in February when it was all change.

In the weeks leading up to our ‘makeover’ we talked about what sort of look we wanted in the lounge and both agreed that we wanted a modern version of what we already had. We still really liked the colour of the lounge, it feels fresh, yet relaxing all year round. During the day it feels bright, as though you are sitting in a spring meadow, in the evening the lights reflecting against the walls make it feel warm and cosy. The only trouble was, the colour we had painted with last time was no longer available in the shops so that’s where Valspar at B&Q came in. We took along a photograph of our current walls and asked for a slightly brighter version of what we already have. With the help of the assistant on the Valspar desk she produced exactly what we were looking for. Hubby painted the lounge in a day and was very impressed with the quality of the paint, it went on easily, was low odour and dried with a professional finish. We only needed two coats and it was done.

A few days later with the help of my Mum, I wallpapered a feature wall with contrasting paper I found at Next Home. It wasn’t the easiest paper to line up I can tell you but we did it and I am very happy with the end result.

We bought our carpets from Tapi Carpets in Peterborough who were great at helping us to make the right decision. We wanted a slightly darker colour this time which would hopefully not show the dirt so easily as our last carpet had. We managed to time the carpet fitters to arrive the day before our new suite was being delivered so we were able to dispose of our old sofas to give us ample space to work in.

Before Christmas we ordered our new suite from Harvey’s after much deliberation. We had loved our old suite so much it had been difficult to find a suitable replacement. There are so many fabric sofas we love but the Beans (and Daddy) are clumsy and will often spill drinks on the sofa so for the time being we are sticking with leather. We wanted something which looked a bit funky but was still comfortable and big enough for the 6 of us to share. We also decided that when the new suite arrived we would turn the lounge around so that we were facing the outer wall and it has made such a difference.

We took down our old lighting and curtain poles, replacing them all with chrome to match the feet on the sofas and really modernise it. I have removed all of my wooden photo frames to be replaced with silver ones and I’m still on the lookout for the right rug. I found some plain curtains in the sale at BHS to match the walls and give the sense of continuation which makes the room feel bigger.

There are still odd little bits that I want to tweak and add to the lounge but I need to find the right items first, I’m still looking for the right clock to compliment the lounge and we haven’t yet decided whether we will place a mirror or pictures above the sofa to break up the wallpaper a little. All in all, we are very happy with our new lounge and despite being the same colour, it feels like a different room.

    • Haha yes, there is that when there is so much to choose from. I took a couple of the colour cards with me and then took them to the shop to match up with wallpaper, it made the choice much easier 🙂 x
