Weekend Activities That Teach Kids About Sustainability

April 11

I’m always looking for ways to make learning fun and meaningful for my children. And what’s more important than teaching them how to care for our planet? It can sometimes feel like a massive undertaking, but teaching sustainability doesn’t have to be a chore! In fact, it can be a wonderful opportunity for family bonding. I’ve found that activity for kids is a fantastic way to teach kids about sustainability. Here are some of my favourite weekend activities to help kids learn about sustainability and develop a lifelong love for the environment.

Teach Kids About Sustainability

In today’s world, environmental issues are becoming increasingly pressing. It’s crucial to help children understand the importance of sustainability from a young age. By teaching sustainability, we not only equip them with the knowledge they need to make responsible choices, but we also instil in them a sense of responsibility towards our planet. We want our children to understand the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. Plus, when kids learn about these things early, they’re more likely to adopt sustainable practices as they grow.

Here are 20 activities that I’ve found to be a fun way to teach kids all about sustainability.

  1. Start a Recycling Station: Make recycling a visible and easy process. Decorate bins together and clearly label them for different materials. Explain what happens to the recycle materials after they leave your home.
  2. Composting in the Garden: Show kids how easy sustainability is with composting. Compost is a fun activity that is educational. Set up a compost bin in your garden and involve your children in collecting food waste. Explain how composting allows food to decompose and turns into nutrient-rich soil.
  3. Visit a Local Farm: Spend the day at a local farm and teach children where their food comes from.
  4. Create a Nature Collage: Get creative with leaves, twigs, and other natural materials.
  5. Build a Bird Feeder: A fun project that helps local wildlife.
  6. Plant a Tree: A classic eco-friendly activity that makes a lasting impact.
  7. DIY Cleaning Products: Show your children how to make cleaning products from everyday household ingredients.
  8. Upcycle Old Clothes: Get crafty and give old clothes a new lease on life.
  9. Reusable Shopping Bags: Decorate reusable shopping bags to help your children remember to use them.
  10. Water Conservation Challenge: Monitor water usage at home and see who can save the most.
  11. Energy Saving Detectives: Have the kids go around the house and spot where energy can be saved.
  12. Litter Pickers: A walk around the neighbourhood picking up litter is a fun way to teach kids about looking after their community.
  13. Make a Bug Hotel: Use scrap wood to build a house for insects, teaching your children about biodiversity.
  14. Read Books About Nature: There are lots of exciting books that show children about sustainability.
  15. Watch Documentaries About Sustainability: Use movies as a fun and creative activity to discuss looking after our planet.
  16. Make Art from Recycled Materials: Use cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and more to get artsy!
  17. Start a Garden: Even a small garden can make a big difference.
  18. Make your own wrapping paper: Stop using shop bought wrapping paper that cannot be recycled and make your own using brown scrap paper.
  19. Visit a Recycling Centre: Take a trip to the local recycling centre so your children can see what happens to your household recycle.
  20. Make Seed Bombs: A fun hands-on project that helps pollinate local areas.

Print this list out, stick it on the fridge, and tick off each activity as you complete it! Together, we can make learning about sustainability fun AND impactful!

Teach Kids About Sustainability

I believe that one of the best ways to teach kids about sustainability is through hands-on activities. These activities to help them learn about sustainability not only make learning more engaging but also allow children to understand concepts in a tangible way. For example, setting up a recycling bin and sorting materials together is a great hands-on way to teach about waste management. Similarly, teach your kids how to compost, seeing composting allows food to decompose breaking down in the soil. It is very efficient at breaking down leftover kitchen scraps and turning them into rich fertilizer for your garden, can be incredibly impactful. Hands-on projects like these really help them learn.

Children learn by watching us. One of the most effective ways to teach kids about sustainability is to lead by example. When they see you actively involved in sustainability, they’re more likely to adopt sustainable habits themselves. Make sustainable living a family affair. Show them how easy sustainability is a lot easier than they think!

Teaching sustainability to children isn’t just about imparting knowledge; it’s about empowering the next generation to become environmental stewards. By making learning fun and engaging, we can inspire kids to develop a lifelong commitment to protecting our planet.

By incorporating these activities for kids and families into your routine, you’re not only encouraging kids to take care of the earth but also giving them a sense of responsibility towards our world. It’s a journey we can all embark on together, creating a brighter, more sustainable future for our children.
