Last week, my husband Simon and I enjoyed experiencing the Diversity Supernova showcase at the New Theatre in Peterborough. I bought the tickets when they were first released as something to look forward to. As avid fans of dance, music and shows in general, we were eager yet uncertain about what to expect from a live performance by Diversity, having only seen them on television before. To put it simply, we were blown away!
Mesmerising Performance: From Start to Finish
From the moment the music began to fill the theatre, we were captivated by the storytelling, choreography, and extraordinary skills of the dancers. Each movement seemed to effortlessly weave together, drawing us into a mesmerising journey filled with nostalgia, humour, sadness, fear, and awe.
Astounding Skills: The Artistry of Dance
One of the most remarkable aspects of the performance was witnessing Ashley, and the other dancers execute seemingly impossible flips and tricks with fluidity and precision. Watching them backflip off the top platform made my ankles wince in pain!! Despite this being Ashley’s first show back after an injury, his performance was nothing short of astonishing.
Heartfelt Choreography: Weaving a Tale
The choreography, crafted by Ashley, served as the heart of the show, seamlessly intertwining with the poetic words of Dujon ‘Scoop’ Thomson to create a rich tapestry of storytelling, amazing dance routines and clever visuals.
Enhanced Experience: Special Effects and Visuals
The use of special effects, including lighting and screens that seemingly made Ashley ‘float,’ added a whole new dimension to the performance, enhancing the overall experience. I don’t want to give away spoilers but the ‘car scene’ reminded me of a scene in the Lion King (obviously no cars in the Lion King but if you have seen both you will know what I mean). It’s very cleverly done and creates quite the spectacle.
As for the scenes in the rain!! Well, perhaps it’s because I have reached that age but I swear somebody turned the heat up in there!
Exceptional Talent: The Power of Diversity
As for the dancers themselves, Diversity proved why they are regarded as one of the best dance troupes of our time. Their sharp synchronicity and innovative use of each other to propel themselves through intricate moves showcased their exceptional talent.
Emotive Moments: Touching the Soul
Like I said, no spoilers here but I must mention that there were some incredibly emotive moments in the show that touched upon universal themes, prompting deep reflection and introspection.
Audience Reception: A Standing Ovation
The energy in the theatre was palpable, with the majority, if not all, of attendees leaving with smiles on their faces and offering a well-deserved standing ovation at the show’s conclusion. The audience was proof that Diversity is exactly that, Diverse! There were people of all ages and stages of life. I had half expected to feel like one of the oldies, but it was a great mix of people there to have a good time.
Conclusion: A Must-See Experience
In conclusion, Diversity’s Supernova is a must-see for anyone who appreciates the art of dance and storytelling. With its wide-ranging appeal and the undeniable camaraderie of the performers, it’s an experience that will leave you wanting more.
