On Saturday, I found myself in Lincoln to collect Lillie’s prom dress, seizing the opportunity to make the most of the trip by planning an excursion with the boys. Recalling our enjoyable visit to the Lincoln Museum last year with Mum, Lillie, and Ollie, I knew it would be the perfect destination to revisit for some quality time with Ollie and Albie.
Lincoln Museum is situated on Danes Terrace and is free to visit (donations are welcome).
Lincoln Museum & Usher Gallery Thursday – Monday 10am – 4pm

Navigating the museum was a breeze, with clear signage guiding us through its various sections from Past to Present and vice versa. The layout, featuring a café, children’s play area, and gift shop at the entrance, facilitated our journey seamlessly. Despite being located downstairs, the well-maintained restrooms were easily accessible thanks to a lift and complemented by amenities like a buggy park and lockers.
Exhibits and Interactive Elements
The exhibits captivated children and adults alike, offering glimpses into historical narratives intertwined with interactive experiences. From dressing up as characters from different eras to exploring vibrant displays like Jason and his Argonauts exhibition, there was never a dull moment. The boys particularly enjoyed the virtual art and creating their own Argonauts on the magnetic wall, fostering creativity and engagement.
Staff and Atmosphere
The museum’s staff contributed to the welcoming atmosphere. Their friendliness enhanced our overall experience, and their approachability added to the sense of hospitality that permeated throughout our visit.
Educational Value and Personal Connection
Having grown up in Lincolnshire, delving into the region’s history resonated deeply with me. It sparked conversations and reminiscences with my sons about places intertwined with our lives. The museum served as a bridge between the past and present, enriching our understanding of local heritage. What I loved most was when the boys spotted items they had learned about in school or online; it’s nice to know that what they see and hear sinks in.
Children’s Enjoyment and Accessibility
While I anticipated Ollie’s enthusiasm, I was pleasantly surprised by Albie’s enjoyment, which was evident in his exclamation of satisfaction upon leaving the museum. His endorsement speaks volumes, highlighting the museum’s appeal to children of varying ages. The accessible location further facilitates family outings, with ample parking opposite the main entrance and convenient access from Lincoln’s main thoroughfares. We parked at the top of Steep Hill near the Cathedral and walked down, but the museum is just as easily accessible from Lincoln High Street.
Memorable Moments
Among the many highlights, the boys were particularly drawn to the old Fiskerton Log Boat, reminiscent of past adventures at Flag Fen in Peterborough and sparking nostalgic recollections of previous family outings.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our visit to the Lincoln Museum proved to be a delightful journey through time, seamlessly blending education with entertainment. Its diverse offerings and family-friendly environment make it a destination worth exploring for families seeking both fun and enlightenment.
