Are you worried about travelling with your younger children? Well you don’t have to be. We understand that you’ve seen horror stories of people travelling with kids, or you’ve seen how some people react to children when they are on flights, but their reaction is not your concern. The only thing that you can do is do your best to ensure that you have got everything sorted as best you can so that they can have the best experience possible,
If you focus too much on what other people are going to think and not enough on how your kids feel, or how they are coping with the trip, that’s when you’re going to have issues. In this article, we’re going to be focusing on some of the different ways that you can avoid having a nightmare with your children when it comes time to travel. Want to know more? Read on.
Pack Snacks For The Journey
One of the best pieces of advice that we can give you is to pack snacks for the journey. We understand that some people may be hesitant to do this because generally you want your child to avoid going to the toilet as much as possible so that you’re not up and down all of the time, but that’s better than the screaming alternative. There is nothing wrong with giving them a snack box for the duration of your journey whether that is a flight or in the car on the road.
You can get cute little snack boxes so that they each have their own, and then you can fill it with the things that they love. Your mummy brain is going to tell you to fill it with healthy snacks, but a good mix is ideal here. Give them some fruits and veggies if they like them, but also include those little treats that they love to give them something to look forward to. It’s a nice way to keep them occupied for a while, and you won’t have to listen to them tell you they are hungry 100 times in a few hours which is always a win.
Ensure They Have Entertainment Options
Now, don’t come at us here because we’re not saying that you should give your child some sort of technology all day, every day and tell them to go and sit in a corner somewhere because that is not fair to your kids. But, in situations like this, technology can be an absolute lifesaver. Nothing bad is going to happen to them because they watched a few hours of TV while you were trying to get from A to B. But, most children won’t even watch a couple of hours of TV, so it isn’t really an issue.
You can also load games onto these devices to ensure they have something else to do. You can bring some of their favourite small toys and let them play with those. You could bring books and read to them. You can bring music and let them listen. There are so many fun entertainment options that you can consider, depending on how you’re travelling of course.
Prepare Them For Travel
If you want your journey to go smoothly, then you need to prepare yourself for what is to come. They need to know what to expect, what is going to happen, and if you tell them over and over at random times, even though it might feel annoying for you, it will help them come to terms with it. It prepares their brain so they know what to expect, as a lot of issues children have come down to facing unknown things.
Talk to them about it, show them what will happen, and play games about it. Make it into a fun learning experience, so that when it does come to it, the reality isn’t quite as daunting.
Talk Them Through Everything That Is Happening
Children thrive on routine and when you go on vacation, that routine goes firmly out of the window. They won’t be waking up in the same bed they are used to and if you travel far away then there may also be some jetlag to contend with. Ensure you talk to them, in an age and stage appropriate way about what the plan is while you are away.
You could set them up with a little travel diary, showing which days you are away for and what you will be doing each day. Perhaps ask them to choose an activity that they might want to do. You never know it might something as simple as sitting on a beach or swimming in the sea.
If you are traveling by different transport methods then inform them of this plan too, it might not be as straightforward as a plane and a car. There could be boats or trains involved in your trip, how exciting. If you are arriving at your destination too early for hotel booking then you could use a facility such as luggage storage in Seville to store your suitcases and heavier bags.
Let Them Be Involved In Decisions
Finally, if you have older children then you could always involve them in the travel plans. Family vacations are just that, they involve the whole family. Perhaps you could all put your chosen destinations into a hat and then pick where you are going to go. That way, you get to go somewhere eventually that is on your bucket list. One person may choose Japan while the other chooses Florida. While you may not be able to do them all in one go or even in the same year, they will happen at some point. This gives everyone something to look forward to.
Of course, if your children are younger and don’t know much about travel destinations then you could involve them in what they want to take and what they want to wear while away. It’s the little things that make children feel important and valued.
Hopefully you found this article helpful and insightful. Traveling with children can be incredibly stressful but having everything in place before you go means there will be less hiccups.
