Choosing A New Career After Motherhood

Maternity leave is supposed to be a time of rest, relaxation and excitement when you wait for your baby to be born. When the baby is born, you are thrown into a whole new life, and it’s this new life and identity that you have for yourself that makes you question yourself. You can often take on a new identity and not know who you are when you become a parent. The world changes for you, with a whole new perspective on life making things look totally different than you would have ever expected.

Heading onto maternity leave is one thing, but when you know that you are coming back off and going back to work, you need to think about what you want to do with your life. As a working mother, you’re going to discover how things have changed for you. The career you’ve always had may not be the career that you continue to want. The time you spend on maternity leave is a blessing for more than just the baby; it’s going to give you the time you need to figure it out! Below, we’ve put together some tips that you need to figure out what you want to do with your life after a baby blows it out of the water.

Find Something That Fits

The biggest problem with working for a new mother is that it doesn’t fit in with the vision she has to work around her children. That new baby doesn’t stop being fascinating just because you’ve gone back to work. You want to continue to soak them up, which means that you need to figure out what will work around your family. If work doesn’t seem appealing right now, you could always choose to go back to studying and choose between a general MBA vs specialized MBA. You could have a better pick of jobs if you think about retraining or learning something new. It helps you to find something to work around your family if you retrain into something new!

The Return

It’s scary to return to work after a long break. What if the person they hired to cover you was better? What if your confidence is shot to the ground because you’ve lost touch with the industry? It’s a worry for most mothers, especially if they have spent a lot of time away. A complete career change after maternity leave is common among new mothers. They want to find the job they want, and this way there is no big return. Instead, there is only a new start for them to think about, which is often nowhere near as scary!

Deciding to find a whole new career after motherhood has hit your life like a grenade is pretty normal. You want to do something worthwhile and you want to make sure that you are doing something you love at the same time. Find a career that works for your family, and you’ll be much happier for it!
