York, the walled city in North Yorkshire, is home to some of England’s most significant historical treasures. The stunning 13th-century Gothic-style York Minster Cathedral dominates the skyline and is one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. The cathedral has been a place of worship for over 1,400 years and boasts exquisite stained glass windows considered some of the finest examples of medieval art in the world.

Surrounding Attractions

River Ouse

Jorvik Viking Centre

Jorvik Viking Centre

One must-see attraction is the Jorvik Viking Centre, which takes visitors back to experience life in Viking-age York. Here, you can see how people lived, worked and played over 1000 years ago. The centre has interactive exhibits and artefacts that give insight into Viking life and culture. I remembered visiting here on a school trip and was excited to share it with the Beans. They were all blown away by their visit.

Hole in the Wand

Hole in the Wand

On Sunday morning, we began early with a game of crazy golf at Hole in the Wand, directly opposite the Jorvik Viking Centre. We had such a fun morning from the moment we arrived. The staff were so friendly and made the whole experience magical. The course itself is very clever, and some holes are quite challenging. In terms of value for money, we were impressed as the ticket price included a Potion Drink at the end. Even the optional extras were very competitively priced. We all agreed we would go back again.

National Railway Museum

Flying Scotsman

The National Railway Museum has long been our favourite, and it’s been a while since our last visit, so we decided to spend the afternoon there. The Flying Scotsman is currently on display there, so we booked a timed ticket (free of charge) to view this magnificent locomotive in all its glory as well as the Mallard, the Shinkansen, Stephenson’s Rocket, and so many more. It’s a great day out for the whole family.

There is a car park opposite which is just £10 for the day.

York City Walls

York Walls

Walking along the York City walls is an experience no visitor should miss. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city’s skyline while immersing yourself in its past. You will also come across many landmarks, such as Clifford’s Tower and Monk Bar, that offer a glimpse into what life was like during medieval times.

Art Galleries and Shopping

One of our favourite things to do in York (and countless other cities) is to visit art galleries. There are plenty to choose from in York city centre as well as the York Art Museum in Exhibition Square. I love that my children find so much joy in talking about their favourite pieces of art and the artists they love.

Finally, York has a vast selection for those who enjoy a spot of retail therapy, from the market stalls in Shambles Market to the quirky shops and boutiques in The Shambles, Stonegate and the more mainstream shops in Coppergate, Parliament Street. Further out of town, you’ll find shopping villages, parks and designer shopping outlets.
