Our Family Visit to the Silverstone Museum for Ollie’s Birthday

There’s something undeniably exciting about a family day out at the Silverstone Museum — the beating heart of British motorsport. As part of our half-term adventures, we spent today (28th October 2025) celebrating Ollie’s 15th birthday with a trip to this incredible attraction, located beside Luffield Corner of the iconic Silverstone Circuit.

Simon and I had visited before, but this time it felt extra special. Ollie’s Nanna had bought him a Silverstone Museum pass for his birthday in September, and he was beyond thrilled to finally use it. Just the three of us – Simon, Ollie, and me – spent around four hours exploring, learning, and soaking up the history of British motor racing.

Discovering the Silverstone Museum

Silverstone Museum

From the moment we stepped inside, we could feel the buzz of energy that makes this place so iconic. The Silverstone Museum (also known as the Silverstone Interactive Museum) tells the story of over 75 years of Formula 1 and British motorsport, blending the past, present, and future of Silverstone and British motor racing through immersive displays and interactive experiences.

We wandered through the exhibits twice — there was just so much to see! From the replica of the Silverstone race track to beautifully displayed racing cars, helmets, and suits worn by legends of the sport, every corner celebrated the home of British motor racing.

The museum offers visitors of all ages a truly hands-on experience, encouraging you to get up close to some of the most iconic cars in British motorsport history.

The History of British Motor Racing

The storytelling at the Silverstone Museum is second to none. Through captivating videos, interactive displays, and historic artefacts, we discovered how an old RAF airfield evolved into the home of the British Grand Prix. The history of the circuit is brought vividly to life, charting the journey of the Formula 1 World Championship from its earliest days to the present day.

I especially loved learning how Silverstone became the heart of British motorsport, showcasing incredible engineering talent and the thrill of racing through the years. It’s easy to see why the museum has been shortlisted for Museum or Collection of the Year — it truly celebrates the beating heart of motorsport here at Silverstone.

The Thrill of Racing – Hands-On Exhibits & Simulators

Ollie was completely in his element! From trying on racing helmets to lifting a Formula 1 wheel, he was amazed by how much there was to do. We finished our visit with the Ultimate Lap of Silverstone cinema experience — a breathtaking, immersive show that takes you on a sim experience around the famous Luffield corner and the iconic Silverstone Circuit itself.

We had planned to test our reactions on a state-of-the-art simulator, giving us all a taste of the thrill of racing – unfortunately I forgot to book in advance and it was fully booked this time. So let that be a lesson if you plan to visit, book in advance for the Sim if you are set on giving it a go. We plan on visiting again soon because tickets are pay once – visit free for a year!! It’s no wonder the museum has become a must-visit for fans of all ages — it blends learning and excitement in such a fun, modern way.

After a couple of hours exploring, we stopped for lunch at the on-site café. We tucked into panini, cakes, and drinks, refuelling before heading back for a second lap of the museum and then out onto Luffield Corner where we were able to watch F4 cars doing practice laps.

Before leaving, we couldn’t resist browsing the Silverstone Museum gift shop, filled with motorsport-inspired artwork, F1 clothing, and models of iconic racing cars. Ollie picked out a few souvenirs to remember his special day, and I have to admit, I was tempted by the beautiful Formula 1 prints myself!
