Planning a trip to Venice? You’re in for a great time. Venice is one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations, and it’s easy to see why – as a ‘floating city’, it is pretty unique, and full of incredible places to explore.
While you could spend your time wandering the streets and soaking up the sights, it helps to have a plan if you really want to make the most of your visit.
Here are 5 things you should do in Venice to help you make the most of your time in this unbelievable city.
1. Check out the sights

Venice is full of special places to see, bringing together architecture, art and culture across an interesting and striking city. Some of the top places to visit in Venice include:
- La Basilica di San Marco (St Mark’s Basilica)
- Piazza San Marco
- Doge’s Palace
- Ponte di Rialto
- Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Venice is a very walkable city – it has to be with no cars! You can also use the city’s boat network to get to different places. Book tickets to the main attractions in advance to avoid queues or being unable to visit at your chosen time.
2. Take a gondola ride

It’s a bit of a tourist cliché, but you can’t go to Venice without taking a gondola ride. Whether you choose to explore the city by day or take an evening tour, a gondola ride can be a fantastic way to take in the sights of Venice.
3. Hop on the train to Verona
This one is cheating! But Venice has some excellent train links to other destinations in Italy. Verona is just a short train ride from Venice, and is worth the journey. It’s the city where Romeo and Juliet was set, is home to an arena that dates back more than 2,000 years and whose streets are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. It’s full of hidden gems and luxury experiences that won’t cost the earth.
4. Sample the local cuisine
A visit to Venice wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the local cuisine. Italian food is some of the best in the world, and you won’t be short of restaurants to try in Venice. Top of your list should be the San Giorgio Cafè Bistrot, a stunning spot where local flavours and ingredients are the order of the day. Try to avoid restaurants located near the main attractions, as these will often be crowded and more expensive than restaurants a little further out.
5. And of course, wander the streets!

While it’s good to have plans during your stay, you can have an amazing time simply wandering the streets! Explore the different corners of Venice and discover the city for yourself. Just be mindful of dead ends – it’s easy to get lost in the maze of canals and walkways.
Venice is one of those cities that you need to visit at least once. With a fascinating history, wonderful culture and unique experiences, your trip to Venice will be one to remember.
