Nothing says dependability quite like the Toyota brand. There have been many models over the years that have sold fantastically well in the US, such as the Corolla. Toyota essentially dominated the 80s and 90s, and that carried over into this century as well.
If you decide to stop by a Toyota dealership to check out some of the latest models, you may quickly notice something. The current crop of Toyota vehicles is putting an emphasis on electric power and stepping back from fossil fuel consumption.
It is no secret why that is happening, as many companies are following suit. However, what is it about Toyota that makes it obvious they’re leading the charge in this area?
Let’s take a moment to answer that question.
A Multi-Pathway Approach
First, it’s crucial to point out that Toyota is taking what experts call a “multi-pathway” approach to the electric vehicle market. That basically means that they are trying to reduce carbon emissions in multiple ways simultaneously.
Yes, Toyota is coming out with several new EV models per year, but they are also putting a lot of energy and money into the study of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hybrid ones. Their commitment to coming out with next-gen fuel cell technology in the immediate future speaks to their determination to continue dominating this market even as they help the planet.
Innovative Manufacturing Processes
Innovation in Toyota’s manufacturing processes are also worth talking about. Toyota is using something called gigacasting at the moment.
This is technology that allows for simpler EV manufacturing and increased productivity. Their Myochi plant is using this tech to great effect.
The self-propelled conveyance system they are working on for easier manufacturing is also coming into play. The aim of this tech is to have enhanced flexibility in the layout of the company’s assembly lines.
This technology is considered to be proprietary, meaning that other companies are not really using it yet. They may adapt it at some point, but for now, it’s another way Toyota seems to be far ahead in their creation of EVs compared to what many other companies are currently doing.
Better Battery Technology
Perhaps what’s most vital about Toyota’s plans for EVs, though, is their superior battery technology. Everything that they’re doing hinges on that.
They are deep into the study and production of both solid-state and lithium-ion batteries. It would not be hyperbole to say that these batteries are going to be able to last for decades longer than current versions.
The energy density of these batteries will be unlike anything seen before in the automotive world. The charging times will be much faster.
What’s going to be the most impressive about them, though, is their lifespan. It’s hard to say yet exactly how long they will be able to last, but Toyota’s engineers have the highest of hopes for this tech.
Simply put, Toyota’s ingenuity seems to be on full display when you look at what they’re doing in the EV market right now.
