The Technology All Businesses Need

One of the great things about setting up a business in the modern era is that you really don’t need all that much to get started. In fact, with a few essentials alone, it’s normally possible to get an operation up, running, and making money even from the comfort of your own home. Evidence of that can be found in the sheer number of home-based businesses that exist around the world; did you know, for example, that there are 15 million home-based businesses in the US, which account for 50% of all businesses in the country?

With that said, while it’s relatively easy to set up a business from home, you will need a few pieces of technology to get started. These tools don’t just make running your business possible, but provide the foundation upon which it can reach its full potential.

Thinking of setting up a business from your garage/office/kitchen table? Make sure you have the following.

People often think that, so long as they have a laptop or computer, they can set up a business. But that’s not really true — you’ll need to have a powerful, fast machine for that to be possible. Your current laptop or computer might be just fine for browsing the web or watching YouTube videos, but it might not be equipped to deal with the demands of running a business, which often requires you to have multiple applications running at once. If your current machine isn’t up to the task, then be sure to upgrade before getting underway. It’ll save you a lot of unnecessary stress; there’s nothing worse than trying to get work done and finding that your machine just isn’t playing ball.

A Printer/Scanner

The vast majority of your operations will be digital, but there’ll be times when you simply have to print or scan a document. And depending on the type of business you run, you might find that you have to print/scan frequently. If you’re operating an e-commerce business, for instance, then you’ll likely (or hopefully) be printing shipping labels every single day. Having a good printer that also has scanning capabilities, such as an Xerox C315, will make life easier. Just be sure to be fully stocked up on C315 cartridges so that you’re never caught short. It’s also recommended to print out any critical documents, since while cloud storage is generally reliable, nothing is guaranteed to work one hundred per cent of the time.

Security Software

Most of the technology that you buy will be designed to help your business grow, but you’ll also need technology to help keep your business protected, too. The most important of these is security, anti-virus software. Cybercrime is on the rise, and small businesses are disproportionately targeted because they’re the ones that have poorer security measures and are thus easier to access. Investing in quality security software should be enough, but if you’re particularly concerned, then look at working with an IT company that offers security services.
