8.5 hours of tutoring can improve exam resits by at least one grade

More than 150,000 exam resits are expected in English and Maths in November

7 OCTOBER 2025: FindTutors, a leading UK private tuition service by GoStudent, reveals that for the estimated 150,000 Maths and English Language exam resits set to take place in November, students could see an improvement in their grades with just 8.5 hours of personalised tutoring.

A peer-reviewed study byGoStudent in partnership with FindTutors, which surveyed over 2,600 parents and students, reveals that for students who weren’t happy with the grades they received over the summer, many could benefit from private tutoring to improve them. In fact, 75% of students that used personalised tutoring saw grade improvements.

Other key data from the report:

  • 90% of students who improved their grades also increased their confidence levels
  • 80% of English students receiving tutoring improved their grades
  • 70% of Maths students receiving tutoring improved their grades
  • 44% of students were able to improve their grades with just 10 personalised tutoring lessons

The data also indicates that consistency and frequency are directly correlated with increased grades in students across different educational levels, with students who saw a tutor three times a week improving their grades the most. This suggests it is not too late for additional tutoring to make an impact on exam resits in a few weeks time.

With the resits for Maths and English Language approaching in November, thousands of students are now entering a crucial phase of preparation, where revisiting old topics must go hand in hand with tackling new themes and content.

But with a diminishing amount of time remaining to go over the Maths and English Language subjects, it is often a struggle for students to know where to start, and who to turn to for support.

Albert Clemente, CEO at FindTutors, comments:

“The period leading up to exam resits is never easy, and it can feel more pressured and stressful than the original exams. When students choose to opt for resits, they can often be left to their own devices, revising as best they can with limited resources. While many are able to improve their grades under their own steam, it is clear from this report that the more help they are offered, the better in terms of increasing their grades.

“If your child doesn’t get the results they want and they choose to resit their exams, look for a tutor who can best support their learning and help them build their confidence for the resits and future exams, such as A-levels and university assessments.”
