Most people think of their home as a place that drains money, a place where they need to be on a tight budget, right? There’s things to worry about like mortgages, bills, maintenance, and honestly, the list never ends. But if you really think about it, homes have far more potential than most people give them credit for.
While yeah, sure, people know they can rent out a room or make their home into an Airbnb to make some extra cash, it’s not exactly the only option either. Well, you should also keep in mind that Airbnb, at least, is getting more regulations (which is technically a good thing, considering it really hurts the housing market). But anyway, renting a room isn’t technically the only thing out there.
Actually, with a little creativity, that house could start pulling its weight and earning some cash. And no, this isn’t about flipping houses or turning into a landlord (or the room for rent example that was just mentioned). Sometimes, there are other ways to make some money; it doesn’t mean you need to use these options, but they’re at least there.
Rent Out Your Driveway

Alright, so starting off with this one, do you have a driveway that spends most of its time empty? Well, you better believe that’s a goldmine, especially if you live anywhere near a city, a stadium, or even a train station. Seriously, people will pay good money for a secure spot where they don’t have to circle the block for 20 minutes.
Actually, there are a lot of apps now that exist just for renting out parking spaces, so it’s as simple as listing it and watching the offers roll in. But of course, it depends on where you live, because if you live in the middle of nowhere, well, it probably won’t work whatsoever.
While yeah, threre’s different apps out there, just look into one that’s more favourable to you.
People Need Storage
Yep, lofts, basements, garages… they’re all notorious for becoming black holes of forgotten Christmas decorations and boxes from three moves ago. But if you get around to clearing the junk out, you probably have some extra space that could be used. Why does it matter? Well, there are plenty of people who are willing to pay to stash their stuff somewhere safe that isn’t a massive storage facility. Of course, it depends on where you live, but it’s something to consider.
Host a Rooftop Bee Colony
Okay, this one might be the weirdest of them all, and it also just depends on where you live. But some organisations will have to have your rooftop or even your garden (if it’s big enough) for pollination for bees. Basically, they’ll pay rent for space to have a hive.
Make Your Roof Work Harder
Speaking of rooftops, they’re seriously underutilised. Maybe this one could be considered low-hanging fruit, but it still deserves some attention. Alright, so instead of just sitting there catching rain, they can pull their weight. The most practical option would be solar panels on a flat roof. They generate energy, cut down utility bills, and in some areas, you can even sell unused power back to the grid. But ideally, buy this if you’re already wanting to be energy efficient and think of the money as an extra perk.
Film Location for Hire
For the most part, production companies are always on the hunt for interesting spaces for films, adverts, or photoshoots. Even regular-looking houses can be in demand. But of course, just be prepared for people wanting to look into your house, as famous houses tend to get a lot of unexpected fan visits.
