Work from home Mums, how do you do it?

Mummy MattersWhen Little Bean was a baby I found working from home quite easily because she whilst she was sleeping during the day I could get my head down and get my work done but now that Little Bean no longer takes daytime naps I’m finding it increasingly hard to work on the days that she is at home and I’m starting to dread the summer holidays. Whilst I can put off work for the odd one or two days when she is at home on a normal week, there is no way that I can put off working for the whole of the six weeks of summer.

Tuesday to Thursday I usually do quite well at keeping on top of my work because thankfully Beanie Boy still sleeps for approximately two hours each day but on a Monday and Friday when Little Bean is at home I find myself spending more time getting cross with her and reminding her “Mummy needs to work” than I do actually getting work done. I feel like the worst Mum in the world when I am constantly asking her to leave me alone but I don’t have any other choice as we need for me to earn money and its only for two hours a day and then once Beanie Boy is awake I usually take them out somewhere fun or, weather-permitting, we play together in the garden or do crafts together.

Mummy Matters On Friday morning, Karin and I took our children to a soft play area where they played happily together about a couple of hours before returning home. I really needed to get some work finished but there was no chance at all and so I ended up baking cakes with Little Bean whilst Beanie Boy slept. I try setting her up activities to do whilst he is sleeping but she only sticks at an activity for 10 minutes before she wants something new to do and really, I think she just wants to spend time with me and I feel so guilty when I have to keep pushing her away.

So how do you do it? I could really do with some pointers here . . .

  1. I have a 17 month old son, who is very active and constantly needs watching. I am a work from home mum, with my husband, and the only way we can get anything done is if one of us goes upstairs with the laptop while the other watches over our DS. Thank goodness for the Disney channel. The only problem is that now I want to knock the stuffing out of that stuffed bear Special Agent Oso. And if I hear the Mickey Mouse Hot Dog song once more I will scream!

    • Ah if only my Hubby could work from home too so that we could share it, unfortunately I think I will have to wait until Sept when Little Bean starts school and Beanie Boy can start at pre-school – there is light at the end of a very long tunnel 😉
