eyeshadowTime on my hands . . .

Before becoming a Mum I NEVER left the house without a full face of make-up; foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, blusher and lipstick. I would paint my nails at least once a week and would spend hours washing, blow-drying and straightening my hair.

A change of face

Fast-forward to becoming a new Mum and it was a very different story, at a time when I probably needed makeup more than ever to disguise the bags under my eyes from sleepless nights I would leave the house bare-faced.

As each of my children has grown I have adapted new ways of doing my makeup with limited time and resources. Putting makeup on when you have a small person hanging off your back or climbing up your leg is no mean feat, it’s a definite skill!!

Race against the clock

Just as I had finally mastered making myself look half decent before leaving the house a new challenge was placed before me, getting out of the door in time for preschool and school with said little people also looking half-decent. Needless to say, I gave up on makeup other than for special occasions. I would always favour extra time in bed sleeping to standing in front of a mirror applying my makeup. Hair blow-dries and straightening was relegated to days or nights out only. It’s like a scene from Cinderella on those days let me tell you.

My New Routine

These days I have a new excuse to not wear makeup for the school run, I go to the gym straight after so nowadays I head out of the door in my gym gear with my hair scraped back. On return from the gym I shower, wash my hair (still don’t blow-dry it) and pop on minimal makeup, usually tinted BB cream, cream blusher, mascara and liquid eye-liner. I might treat myself to a nail artist session and let them use the professional nail art kits to keep my hands looking pretty and Sanctuary Spa Wet Skin Moisturiser to keep my skin looking and feeling hydrated.

Experts in Beauty

For the first time in a long time I am starting to feel better about myself, I’m eating cleaner, I’m toning up and generally feeling so much healthier. I still save my full makeup for a night out but I like that because then it feels more like an ‘event’ than a normal day.

Beauty Trends

When I attended the Martinis, Music and Muses event a couple of months ago and got chatting to top blogger Megs Gilbride. I couldn’t help but notice Megs’ gorgeous eyeshadow and realise how out of date I was with the current trends. Now, I’m not proposing that at the age of 41 as a mother of three children I start wearing makeup to rival a beautiful young twenty-something BUT I do like to adapt trends to suit my own personal style. I found this handy Beauty eBook on Ellison’s which has some really good tips. Click on the image above to download your copy – you’re welcome xx
