Once upon a time . . .

Mummy Matters Once upon a time there were six ladies who gave birth to six baby girls and they all became friends. We talked nappies, sleepless nights, teething and milestones. We would walk together regularly, attend baby classes together and enjoy the odd ‘Mummy’s Night Off’ together. We celebrated our girls’ first birthdays together but slowly things began to change . . .

. . . some of the ladies had to return to work and so their time off became more precious, with only a few days off each week they had jobs to catch up on, other friends and family to see so naturally the time for the six of us to spend together with our girls dwindled. By the time of our girls’ second birthdays our group had separated and we would see each other in smaller groups. For one reason or another, some of the ladies grew apart more than others and it makes me sad. Not just sad for us mums but for our girls too, once upon a time they would play together so well but now when they see each other they don’t even recognise each other and that for me is upsetting.

Mummy Matters Sometimes I ask myself if we shouldn’t be the bigger people, put the past behind us and say its all water under the bridge, perhaps give it one more shot? Many of us now have second babies, so far three boys and a girl and there’s still one more to come later this year. Our lives have all followed such similar paths, sometimes I would like us to get together for a playdate and a catch up and remember old times but then maybe that’s the sentimentalist in me? It would probably end in disaster and perhaps some things should be left where they are but I can’t help but wonder if I’m the only one who feels this way?

What about you ladies?

  1. I agree with what you have written, but don’t think that you will ever be able to smooth over all the cracks in the friendship group.
However I believe in being positive, so am game for a play date on the proviso that all negative ‘river water’ is left in the swamp where it belongs.
