I’m going to see The Nutcracker – you can too!

If there is one thing which I have never done, but ALWAYS wanted to do it’s to go to the ballet. As a small child I attended ballet classes and even earned a few medals, unfortunately I’m about as graceful as a baby elephant these days but watching the ballet is still high on my list of must-see events, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake being the two I am most interested in.

The Nutcracker

This Christmas I will be going to watch George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker performed by the New York City Ballet but I won’t be going to New York and they won’t be coming here. Yesterday the performance was recorded live at the Lincoln Centre in New York and then beamed over to the UK via fibre optic satellite technology. The film is being edited and produced as I type and will then be distributed to around 40 screens in selected cinemas including Odeon, Showcase, Vue and a few independents.

Tickets go on sale on Wednesday 21st December and will cost no more than £10 for the multi-million dollar production which includes a 40ft Christmas Tree weighing a massive 1 ton. There will be seventy ballet dancers and a sixty-two piece orchestra. The production has already been described by the New York Post as “the Christmas show of all Christmas shows”.
