Dyson DC59 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner #cutthecord

In December I was lucky enough to be invited down to London as a guest of Dyson to their first ever Blogger event where they were showcasing their new cordless vacuum cleaner, the Dyson DC59. When the email arrived I admit I did a little squeal of excitement because I have heard great things about Dyson but hadn’t so far had the opportunity to test one! At the event we were introduced to the engineers who designed it and were quite rightly very proud of their product and only too keen to tell us all about it and some of their other great inventions.

At first sight you’d be forgiven for thinking that the DC59 is a bit on the little side to be a household vacuum cleaner but that’s where you would be wrong. My initial thought was that it would be the vacuum which resides in the utility room to pick up the spills and mealtime messes but again, that would be wrong. To prove just how good the DC59 really is, the Dyson engineers invited us to test it out against three of the leading cordless competitors. The marble tiles were sprinkled with flour all over and the crevices were filled. Each cordless vacuum was pushed forwards once and the results were plain to see. Pop over to All About Baby Advice and watch her video footage of the test.

Only the Dyson DC59 was able to fully remove the flour from the crevices and thanks to the dual bristled motorhead it was able to tackle the dust as well as the dirt. The Carbon Fibre antistatic bristles reduce the build-up of static charge which means the fine particles of dust on hard floors are easier to capture and the Nylon bristles trap ground-in dirt on carpets so it’s perfect for the whole house. It wasn’t just the performance which stood out though, it was the ease of use of the DC59 in comparison to the competitors, they just didn’t ‘feel’ like a quality piece of equipment. Some were too heavy, others too flimsy and they didn’t steer as easily. In essence, they were no competition at all.

At the end of the event I was given my own DC59 to bring home with me which made Hubby extremely happy. By the time I arrived home I didn’t have the chance to get it out of its’ box and put it to the test because I needed to get on with the children’s tea but the second Hubby arrived home it was out of the box and doing it’s thing in the hallway, the lounge, the kitchen, playroom and stairs before it ran out of power which I think is pretty good going. I had actually vacuumed the previous day but I was shocked when I saw just how much fluff and dirt the DC59 picked up, I am too ashamed to even show you!

One month on

This morning I cleared out my cupboard under the stairs. It has driven me crazy FOREVER because it’s a silly size, it’s deep but it isn’t very high so it hasn’t been great for storage. Plus it’s where we have to store our current pull-along vacuum cleaner. As I opened the door to the cupboard, I realised something;  I haven’t used our old vacuum once since the DC59 came home with me and yet my house looks cleaner than it ever has before. The thing about the DC59 is that it’s just so flipping convenient and it’s perfect for the whole house. Being so lightweight means that I just need to pop the long nozzle on the end and I can easily vacuum away the cobwebs from the ceiling without breaking my back. When it comes to the stairs I just pop on the smaller motorhead and it’s a cinch. Being cordless is also perfect for our house because the not-so clever builders forgot to put electric sockets on our upstairs landing so in the past when cleaning upstairs we would have to plug it into one of the sockets in a bedroom and then move it from room to room to work our way around the upstairs. Now we can just go where we like without any hassle and also with a crawling baby around the house I don’t have to worry about him getting tangled up in the cords.

The DC59 has a run time of 20 minutes on normal mode but if you have a particularly difficult area to clean you can use the Boost button which reduces run time to 6 minutes. I am happy to report that at just over a month in I still haven’t actually had to use the Boost button because it has been man-enough for the job on normal mode.

We still need to get our docking station attached to the wall but at the moment our issue is once again lack of electrical sockets (I think a blind man may have planned our house!) so it might have to be a quick call to the electrician. For now it’s no major issue, you don’t have to use the docking station (I would just like to for tidy sake) ours sits on the worktop in the utility room to charge. The Dyson DC59 is a very welcome new ‘pet’ in our family home.
