Discovering nature with My First Microscope

nature“Look Mummy, I found a nature” – Little Bean, aged 6

I still remember when my Mum bought my first microscope as a child; I thought I was a real scientist! It was those memories, coupled with the fact that Little Bean is huge lover of nature that prompted me to choose the My First Microscope to review for Learning Resources.

When Little Bean opened the boys she yelled “oh wicked” and then tried to look at her own foot under the microscope. I did suggest she might like to try something a little bit smaller first.

First Microscope

The Microscope is very child friendly with chunky wheels to turn and a button to push for the light. The colours make it very unisex which means it can be passed down from sister to brother as they grow and their interests develop. I am a firm believer in learning through play so I love ‘toys’ such as these.

First Microscope

Little Bean and I went out for a nature walk around our local village and collected items for her to look at under her microscope and I have bought her a special notebook so that she can draw what she sees and wire what she learns. Hopefully this will emphasise her love of nature.

When we looked at a selection of the items she had collected I was very impressed at how clear the images were and how well you could magnify them, you can actually see the little hairs on the daisy stem. There was also a little bug on the viola but every time I tried to take a photograph it had disappeared. Little Bean is completely fired up by her microscope and is constantly looking for new things to look at and this is what is so great, it is spurring her on to learn more. I feel this is a ‘toy’ which she will love for a long time to come.
