Bottle success at last with a sneaky Mummy and Yoomi!

DSC04162 I really hope I don’t jinx myself by writing this post but for the last two nights, Beanie Boy has finally taken a bottle at bedtime.  I was a little bit cruel in my method but I decided that enough was enough, I need him to be able to take a bottle at least once per day so that I can have an odd night off once in a while.

On Monday night I made sure that he had a good tea of solids at the table and then took him upstairs to get ready for bed.  I made up a 3oz bottle and offered it to him.  He did his usual trick of just rolling the teat around in his mouth and chewing it.  Every now and then I tried to take the bottle away from him but he kept putting it back into his mouth and chewing some more.  I thought he was going to take it but no, I was disappointed again as he just turned his head away.  Normally at this stage I would breastfeed him to be sure that he wasn’t going to bed hungry but this time I didn’t.  I put him to bed with out breastfeeding him.  He cried for about 2 minutes and then went to sleep.  After 90 minutes I went upstairs and offered him the bottle again.  Again he refused so I put him back to bed without a feed.

At 10pm Hubby went up and offered him the bottle but still no joy and I could feel myself starting to break.  I didn’t like to think of him being hungry but I had told myself that I wouldn’t feed him until 11pm if he didn’t take the bottle so I stuck to my plan.  At 11pm I tried a bottle again and this time success, he took the whole 3oz bottle and then continued to take a full breastfeed too.

Last night I tried the same approach again but this time, he took the bottle at the first feed and again at the 11pm feed, both times having a full breastfeed too.  I’m trying not to get too excited but I’m hoping we’ve finally cracked it!

The bottle that we used was a Yoomi bottle which I was kindly sent a couple of weeks ago following another of my stressed out tweets about how I couldn’t get Beanie Boy to take a bottle.  The Yoomi bottle was designed my Mum and Dad, Farah and Jim after countless feeds spent fumbling around in the kitchen in the middle of the night or asking waiters for hot water to heat their baby’s bottle when out and about.  What they have come up with is a self-heating bottle which heats milk to breast-milk temperature in just 60 seconds, it can be recharged up to 100 times and requires no plugs or batteries.  It is BPA free and has a breast-like anti-colic teat for easy latch on and great for combining breast and bottle feeding.
