072/366 – “It’s great to have you as my Mummy”

Smarties

When you have more than one child it can be difficult to make sure that you spend an equal amount of time with each child on their own, there are so many things which keep us busy as parents that it’s easy to overlook things or should I say children, especially if they are playing really nicely on their own. Little Bean has always been good at entertaining herself and sometimes the temptation to just leave her to it so that you can have some ‘quiet’ time yourself to get on with jobs can be overwhelming. But it’s at those times that I think back to all the special things that Little Bean and I have done just the two of us and it always brings a smile to my face because she is always so grateful for that time. She absolutely loves getting all the attention to herself for a change and so today when Beanie Boy was sleeping Little Bean and I took some time out to do some baking. I didn’t have all the ingredients to make proper cakes from scratch but I always keep a cake kit in the cupboard for rainy days and so today Little Bean chose the Smarties Smiley Faces.

She really loves baking and it reminds me so much of my time spent baking cakes with my Mum when I was a little girl. When I watch Little Bean licking the spoon I think back to when I used to do it too. It doesn’t take long but that time alone together is so special. She generally badgers me for the whole time that the cakes are in the oven asking if they are ready yet. Once the cakes are out, the badgering changes to “can we decorate them yet” and she always wants pink icing! She especially liked using this kit because it had mini smarties in it and when I told her that she could eat any of the smarties that were left over I suddenly noticed a decrease in the number of smarties being used on the remaining cakes so that she had at least 5 to eat.

Once all the cakes were decorated we made drinks and sat down at the kitchen table with a cake each and Little Bean turned to me and said “It’s great to have you as my Mummy” and I may have welled up a little. I asked her why and she said “because you are lovely and you let me do lots of cool things”. Well you can’t say fairer than that can you!

  1. That’s lovely. My son loves baking too. He loves to make cakes but not so keen on eating them. I only have the one child and it is nice being able to give him the attention he needs.
