How often should I change my household items?

We all do it. We hop in the shower every morning, use the toilet, the taps and the sink without even a seconds thought. We use the microwave, cooker, hairbrush and makeup tools just as frequently.

But did you know that some of these things should be replaced more often than you think? It might be pretty far down your list of priorities, but if you have kids around or want to get the best out of your home products – it might be worth moving it up a few!

Here you’ll find advice and tips on how to make the most out of your household appliances!

The showerhead

Used probably every day, your showerhead gets a lot of use and abuse from everyone at home. So how often should it be replaced? Because many types of bacteria thrive in moist areas like your shower, it is recommended that you replace your shower head every 6 to 8 months. You can invest in a new shower head from the better bathrooms site.

Keeping your shower head clean, especially if you have hard water, can be very difficult to manage. The top reason why people notice a dirty shower head is a change in their water pressure! So, get rid of the shower head and purchase a new one that is made of metal instead of plastic to help prevent mould growth and sediment build up in the future.

Pillows

Admittedly there’s no exact science to determine when it’s time to replace your pillow. But here’s a quick trick to know if you should make a beeline to the bedding department: If you have a non-foam pillow, fold it in half. If the pillow doesn’t spring back to its usual flat form, it’s time to buy a new one!

Even pillows that pass the fold test and ones that look like they’re in good shape (no yellow sweat stains) are probably hiding build-up of body oils, dead skin, and dust mites. And after spending almost a third of each day laying on our pillow (some of that tossing and turning), the filling inside will break down over time. So, it’s wise to replace your pillows with some regularity.

Toothbrush

Replace toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months. Consider getting a new toothbrush sooner if you have been sick, especially if the toothbrush is stored close to other toothbrushes. When in doubt, look at the bristles. If they are frayed, they won’t clean teeth as thoroughly. Because children often brush more rigorously than adults, they may need their toothbrushes replaced more often.

Towels

It would seem that you shouldn’t have to change bathroom towels too often.  I mean, you are drying off a clean body with a dry towel, right? Well, that seems logical, but here’s the real deal:  every time you use your towel to dry off, you’re scraping off dead skin cells! It is best to wash bathroom towels every 3-5 times they are used.

That really is the maximum times a towel needs to be dampened (from drying you off), allowed to dry, and then be used again!
