Nobody likes to think of their child being poorly and having to spend time in hospital but the sad reality is that it does happen every single day. So when a child has to stay in hospital they need all the love and comfort possible to enable them to make a speedy recovery and the only people who know how to really give that is family. Ronald McDonald House Charities recognise the importance of family by providing ‘home away from home’ accommodation for families with children in hospital. At present the charity has 15 houses and 25 sets of family rooms across the UK, all close to a children’s ward. Each night of the year they provide more than 450 rooms to keep families together.
Some families have to travel miles to get their children the specialist care that they need from hospitals across the UK and for many this can be for month’s at a time which can make it very difficult to keep families together. Without a local Ronald McDonald House parents can be found sleeping on chairs at their child’s bedside, sometimes a pull out bed if one is available or paying out large sums of money to stay in nearby hotels or B&Bs.
